One more episode...
Today we launched the first of a new series, the riders' profiles. And we launch with Leonardo Leite, a rider raised on the waves of Shorebreak, a slab in the famous beach of Copacabana. Others know him as a successful banker in the neighboorhood.
After surfing the cold waters of Arica, in Chile, and the hot waters of Puerto Escondido, in Mexico, he brought us some beautiful Polynesia pearls. We couldn't make this video without asking him how it was the whole trip.

We got now a new image from the polls for the photo of the week - month or so. The winner was Yoan Florantin with the nicest backflip in the Reunion Island. Next one it will be the other winner, a nice photo of Sao Conrado beach at its best.

Last week we filmed in a heavy beach break called Itacoatiara. That is the cradle of riders like José Otávio, Dudu Pedra and others who surf big waves with absolute technique even when it's huge and hazardous, just like a blender in its full power.

That day was not the case, but we now show some waves that were surfed in the powerful beach break. Riders were Felipe Perusin, Lucas Faria, Giu Lara, Davi Oliveira among others, and, of course, the good surf dudes of Itacoatiara.

Liquide opens its doors to the unknown. This time we chatted with Ian Vello, a guy from the underground Rio. Ian, 19, does nothing for living. Ipanema local, his idol is José Otávio "cuz he has such nicest style".

Like many other bodyboarders in Rio´s scenario, Ian doesn´t run championships and he´s not ashamed of saying his motives "organizations here in Brazil are such shames, it´s always the same dudes who win comps, friends with organizers, you know...". Although he hasn´t been surfing for a couple of months due to a shoulder injury, he was always seen in the outside in bigger swells with his friend and professional bodyboarder Nicholas Bastos. "Well, I feel great when surfing with him, not only because he´s such a great rider, but also a great friend. He always tips me, helping to develop my own style. But when he fails in the water, I also tell him with no pitty.".

"Nicholas Bastos, 18, considered one of the greatest bets for the brazilian bodyboarding, starts year 2010 with strong partners. He is now sponsored by one of most important brands in the market, BSD Bodyboards.

With the contract already signed, athlete and brand see a great year for important achievements. Both are working hard to bring the rider the most important titles worldwide.

Born and raised in Ipanema, he surfs for more than 15 years and feeds dreams ever since. The grommet also surprises all with his maturity when speaking of the sport in Brazil. By his own words, the country has several great riders just like him and does not provide such support for all though. Nicholas is now compromised in divulging the sport even more to bring more sponsors and structure.

The partnership between Nicholas and BSD has already given results. Along the year they will release a signatured board, the great thing for the company. The BSD Nicholas Bastos will be available for sale soon in Brazil's best stores.

The values for the sponsorship wasn't told by both sides. All we know is that he's competing the main comps around the world for the World Tour, the Latin-American Tour, Brazil Tour and main comps in Rio de Janeiro state for this year. "

What´s up folks, today who crosses oceans to get here on Liquide is Yoan Florantin, 21, riding for Sniper bodyboards, coming from an tiny island on the Indian Ocean, a place which is "a perfect and amazing place to live and surf and that mostly all year long which is great , we've got so many good waves , sunshine, hot water, and so many tricky coral reef breaks where it's easy to improve."

Wondering how it´s bodyboarding situation around the globe, we asked our guest how the sport is in France and he answered that, like most countries, bodyboarding is much less popular than surfing "which of course means less financial business,and media interest ,therefore less recognition as well". Besides that, he feels proud of being a french bodyboarder and very thankful for the fact the sport has given him very good opportunities "to travel around the world, to meet fantastic people and share with them so many great experiences indeed!"

-Perfect barrel or stunning trick?

-Probably both! I like mixing tube ride and some tricks on the same wave !

Yoan has become more popular in the bodyboarding media through the Focus project (from which you can see his riding below this interview), a free association created by some friends who want to promote the island, local bodyboarding and local bodyboarders. "it's easier for them to be known and get sponsors, some financial help which they need so much for their career in that sport. Of course I am very happy and proud to be part of that Focus project, they do such a great job! Thanks them for that!", said Florantin.

-Before that, Reunion Island was just known in Brazil by surfing spots. Can you tell us more about the spots bodyboarders like riding?

-The spot of Saint Leu on the west coast of the island is already famous from most riders around the world, but Focus Prod DVD also gives the proof that we have quite a few other great spots on our island which are not as crowded and just perfect to surf as well.

Another curious fact about daily life of the local riders is that sharks can be seen all over the place and they are not able to surf wherever they want. We then asked Yoan how does it feel to surf spots with such harzards. "Reunion Island is in the Indian Ocean, so of course we have sharks here! But it's the same problem in Australia, or South Africa, and so many other places, so we have to be careful and respect some rules, like for instance, no surfing after strong rain, when the ocean gets dirty after overflowing of rivers. It's also better not to surf too late or too early in the day. On our island, only 1/3 of the coast is surfable, the rest is too wild and considered too dangerous. Most of our best surfing spots are on the West and Southern coasts where we have sandy beach, lagoon and reefs, while the East coast is considered wilder and more dangerous, mainly because of sharks... Still, there are a few crazy local riders who are always ready for surfing those dangerous spots whenever the wave sounds perfect..." , relates Florantin.

-Epic arse or massive wave?

-Here, on Reunion Island, we don't have really massive waves except during cyclonic swells once or twice a year, so I would rather say epic arse, because our spots are more adapted to make combo tricks than massive riding waves.

Travel issue.. We wanted to know from Yoan if he already knew South America and if he had traveled to some place he would ever remember. "I have never surfed in south America, eventhough I would love to but it's quite far and so expensive to go there from Reunion Island.. Still, I heard about a few crazy spots like El gringo in Chile which handles the IBA contest each year! And more recently some good wedges in Peru. Of course, I would love surfing overthere, and I hope one day that dream will come true.... ".

-We would like have your opinion about brazilian bodyboarders.

-I think Brazilian bodyboarders are amazing! I noticed they were the best technical riders in small waves during the European IBA contest this year! Eder Luciano, Lucas Nogueira, Uri Valadao, Flavio Rodriguez... etc. They're so competitive, and have a spectacular style! We can really see those guys are really fond of their sport! They seem to give their maximum everytime!

We also wondered whom he is used to surf with on his sessions, and not surprisingly "people like Amaury Laverhne who is in the top 10 , Laury Grenier, Charly Chapelet , Raphael Rajerinera (they all have a sequence in Focus) and so many others who are so good riders, it surely gives you some real motivation to give your best on the wave. There're so many high level riders on Reunion Island! We also have a new generation who are pushing fast as well, some of those kids are just amazing, one of them is only 13 years old, Clement Lodheo! He's the French champion of his category this year, and maybe he´s more advanced than PLC at the same age. Just don't forget his name guys, because you might soon hear about him..." , he says.

We also asked Yoan how does he see the sport within a few years and he said "with jetski, everything seems to be possible! In ten years time, it might be faster, bigger, and higher! As far as I am concerned I have never tested tow but I hope my turn will come soon... Now in future, I honestly hope bodyboarding will just become more and more popular and have a better impact in the world of sport...".

Today we´ll talk about biology. We are going to show our guests some frames from footage we´ve made of some flying invertebrates that are usually seen around the Rio de Janeiro beaches, especially sighted in the wedgy beachies - in this case, São Conrado.
The probability of enconter with some of those creatures raise when two phenomena occurs: offshore winds + swell, and our crew from Liquide will be always hunting that kind of flying being.

- "Hmm... Epic ARS on a massive wave!"

Today who arrives on Liquide, from the other side of the world, is the australian pro bodyboarder Michael Novy, 24. Raised on the waves of Central Coast, New South Wales, Novy is sponsored by NMD bodyboards, Unite Clothing, Agent 18 wetsuits, Stealth Accessories and Eppo's Bodyboard Shop.

A freesurfing lover above all, whose dreams is winning the world tour, the athlete has been riding for over 12 years on a bodyboard. We talked a little about several topics with Michael, and one of them is the sport's situation on his country. "It´s really good, there seems to big a lot of support for bodyboarding at the moment and there lots of young guys starting up it seems! The scene is really good here and you can see when so many guys just stay in and around oz chasing carreers and waves. Personally I find it´s always good to travel and see other countries, but I can´t help but enjoying it when I go home!", says novy.

We went deeper in this subject and asked how is the relation athlete-sponsor, the new generation and the local championships. "It´s really good these days, there are a lot of companies supporting bodyboarding and a lot are companies that have been created by bodyboarders so it´s keeping the money in the sport which is really good! The fact that there were no comps this year was terrible! It was due to some people in the industry not seeing the worth in running international comps, hopefully next year we see a change!", he relates.

Changing to another subject, we asked about his preferences of waves, also from his thinking, what would be the a gnarly wave. "Personally at the moment I really really stoked on doing moves! There is a lot of waves that you just get stuck in the barrel in oz and can get lazy with moves. I´m trying to bring back more moves in my surfing! (...) There’s a lot of waves I would consider gnarly, waves that break on shallow reefs or ledgey rock shelf mostly. Some of the heavier would be Pipeline(Hawaii), Fronton(Canaries), Shark Island and Supers (Australia) just to name a few.", he said.

Novy has starred three flicks - The Road, Roam I & II - with great repercussion in the bodyboarding world, bringing to viewers waves that no one has ever seen before - in conditions that many of us wouldn't even consider getting closer - not mentioning the high performance shown in tow-out sessions and the daily events that happens in a long road trip when chasing unknown waves. Asked how it was like being part of these projects and how they affected his life within the sport, Michael answers "Both were amazing times and I had a lot of fun doing both these projects. Bryce Thurston (filmer of both and owner of agent 18) is an amazing filmer and he´s always a good bloke to travel with. He’s not one to get to bummed and always excited to film no matter what the conditions are like! The Road but was extreme! We almost lost Brendan Newton and Ryan Mattic one night out at see!".

Taking the ride on the road trip subject, we asked him if there was any of them that he would always be remembered and the reason for it. He told us it was his first time at Luna Park... "Yeah the first Time I surfed Luna Park was really rememberable. I drove 20 something hours, slept for 4 hours in a bush, surfed pumping 6 to 8ft waves with good friends all day. Was so exhausted by the end I was delusional. Slept for like 14 hours to re coup then drove 20 something hours home!".

-How do you get phisycally prepared?
-"When I´m at home I do gym sessions 3 days a week, stretch every second day and try and eat as healthly as I can. Its really hard but when on the road and especially when overseas. Big sessions I normally just make sure ive had a good night sleep and a good meal and maybe stretch and warm up before jumping in the water."

We also talked about the sport's current morphing, like tow-ins pushing into bigger and heavier waves, tow-outs lauching people higher than ever, new manouvers, and how does he see all that in a couple of years: "I see people becoming more adventurous with maneuvers and think people will start trying to bust moves like double rolls, rewinds, reverse ars’s and 720s on a regular basis", says.

About new film projects for the next year, Michael told us that were some ideas going on, althought he hasn't started anything yet. He also says that he's heard rumors about a new flick with Mitch Rawlins in which we should probably see about four brand new manouvers from Mitch'ss repertoire.

We ended our exclusive interview asking Novy to say a word for the brazilian bodyboarders. "Keep up the good work! You guys are some of the hungriest competitors out there and I´m always amazed when I see Tamega, Uri, Eder and Lucas surf! Hopefully I´ll make it over to Brazil one day soon! Thanks!".
